Crochet Granny Squares Practice

Crochet Granny Squares Practice

Project Overview

I think granny squares are a great first crochet project. I started with some basic granny square crochet patterns when I got back into crochet. I can say some of my early works were hardly noticeable as a square, but that’s the fun of a granny square—they work up quick and are a great way to practice new stitches.

I found a great resource called 365 Days of Granny Squares, which is where several of these designs came from before I moved on to try other projects.

Lessons & Construction

These motifs were fantastic for mastering foundational skills like the magic ring, double crochet, and learning how to identify a chain-2 turning stitch that counts as a double crochet. With the large gaps and tall double crochet stitches typical of granny squares, you really get to learn the anatomy of each stitch.

One of the biggest pain points for me early on was weaving in the ends. I found it frustrating at first, but these small motifs turned out to be ideal for practicing how to hide yarn tails cleanly across color changes. Each granny square took about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the pattern complexity, making them super rewarding for quick project completions.
