Project Overview
This collection was one of my first big ambitious projects after starting my crochet journey. I was immediately drawn to the Dusk Bag pattern because it looked quick, structured, and, most importantly, it wielded a massive 12mm crochet hook with double-stranded T-shirt yarn.
The goal was to create a set of modern, speedy handmade gifts for friends and family. This was also my first time using T-Shirt yarn, which has a fascinating, stretchy, and soft feel. I ordered nice 800g double skeins, which were perfect since the pattern calls for holding two strands together throughout. It left me with just a tiny bit of extra—not enough for another full purse, but enough for a fun little side project!
The Experience: A Real Workout
I must say, double-stranding T-shirt yarn and using a hook that size was a genuine workout! Wielding a huge hook and navigating it through bulky loops proved to be physically demanding, making it quite the forearm exercise. This is where I really learned the value of high-quality tools. The generic 12mm hook from my starter kit was rough, but the Clover 12mm hook was a game-changer; it was much ergonomic and glided through the bulky yarn far better.
Despite the physical challenge, the bags worked up incredibly fast! The construction is straightforward, taking only about 2 to 3 hours per bag, which made them fantastic candidates for quick-turnaround gifts.
The Finished Collection
The collection includes a range of colors and recipients:
- Maroon (Dusk): A classic look for my Dusk collection.
- Textured Red: Bold and vibrant, using slightly different stitch definitions.
- Dusty Rose: A softer alternative.
- Mini Sophie’s: A tiny, scaled-down version I made when first learning, perfect for a little girl.
I ended up gifting these to Alison, Ethan, my Mom, and Linda, and everyone seemed to really enjoy their soft, textured feel!
