Project Overview
Meet the trio of peas! This project holds a special place in my crafting journey—it was my very first foray into amigurumi crochet and my first attempt at working in the round.
I picked up a Michaels-branded beginner kit to get started. While the yarn included in the kit was a bit rough to work with, working through this project taught me foundational 3D crochet concepts that built my confidence for future projects.
What I Learned & Tool Upgrades
Being so early in my crochet journey, this project came with plenty of steep learning curves:
- Working in the Round: Learning magic rings/circles, single crochet increases, and invisible decreases to make spherical shapes.
- Safety Eyes & Embroidery: My first time placing safety eyes and hand-sewing expressions (smiles and pink cheeks) onto finished pieces.
- Tool Upgrade (The Game Changer): The kit included a small, rigid plastic needle that made weaving ends and sewing pieces together really difficult. Upgrading to a set of Clover Bent Tip Metal Darning Needles was an absolute game-changer. The subtle curve at the tip makes gliding around rounded amigurumi stitches infinitely smoother!
Reflection
Looking back, I can definitely spot my early mistakes—like uneven tension and slightly crooked embroidery lines—but I couldn’t be happier with how these little guys turned out. It took around 8 hours total to work up the pod and all three individual peas, and it proved to be an awesome milestone project.
